WHS includes several academic events into the curriculum to give the students experience in public speaking, knowledge of different cultures and areas of study. The Special Academic Events include:

Veterans of Foreign Wars Essay Contest

Every fall the local Veteran's of Foreign Wars takes part in a national essay contest for junior and senior high students. Each level has a topic dealing with what it means to be an American. Students write a speech and record it. The VFW representative collects the recorded speeches from students in Hernando County and they judge them

Many WHS students have been asked to come to the VFW hall for a special dinner where they were given awards and cash prizes for placing in the contest.

So many WHS students have won prizes in this annual contest that the VFW gave the school a special plaque that hangs in our lobby naming the contest winners over the years.
