Community Involvment

Students and their families are involved with annual community events as well as situations that may arise during the year. Sometimes students have come up with their own ideas such as 10 year-old Kayla who asked guests coming to her birthday party to bring something for victims of a hurricane. The school became involved and helped Kayla fill an airplane with needed goods so Jet Blue could fly her and her “birthday gifts” to the people in need.

  • Food Drives: Students collect money, food and supplies for victims of disasters or for our troops overseas. Living in Florida we know how easily it could be us caught in a weather emergency.
  • UNICEF: Since 1983 WHS students have collected money during Halloween to send to UNICEF to help less fortunate children of the world.
  • Recycle Print Cartridges: Students and their families bring in used computer printer cartridges to be recycled.
  • Adopt a Family at Christmas: Each classroom adopts its own needy family that is made known to us by a local charity. Although we do not know the name of the family we know the ages and sizes of the family members. WHS families are very generous in the annual Christmas giving.
  • Visiting Nursing Homes: Preschool children deliver Valentines made by WHS children in the afternoon program and sing songs to residents in a local nursing home. Junior and senior high students bring gifts and sing Christmas carols for the elderly.
  • Responding to Crisis: Upper level students have helped out with clearing debris from homes and yards of local flood victims. Students have collected books for schools in the Philippines. Students and their families have brought truckloads of supplies for hurricane victims.
